Nice post. For profit urban farms are definitely in our future and a positive step but I think your last statement about replacing grass, a chemically intensive, species poor, monocrop is most salient. We must find a way to discourage lawns; biodiversity reducing, GHG producing, waste generating, water table polluting, energy sucking and encourage home organic food production; biodiverse, health producing, waste reducing, emissions reducing, energy saving is most salient. My masters thesis on urban agriculture is about to get under way here in England. I'll be looking at the best ways to promote and support UA.
Keep up the good work. Do you mind If I link to your blog from mine?
Cheers

At work, they recently announced that a "Motivational Weight Management specialist" will be available on Wednesday's to help people with their diets. I'll try to print out the 'guide to going green' and pop in to some of the sessions to see what the speaker says. It'll be interesting to see if her program matches up with anything that's recommended in the green guide.

Gayle, I'm heading toward the new Walmart to see if they have any organic wine. I've been hearing a great deal about the benefits of diabetics drinking wine so I'm going to have a glass of red [organic] wine everyday. Not to mention, a nice piece of bread and cheese. The thought is absolutely delicious to me!! ;0)

I have recently been investigating techniques for extending the growing season. I have a "cold frame" on the South side of my house that I have been growing lettuce in - ALL WINTER! Outside! I am going to expand this little section for next winter with more salad greens and possibly some carrots.

I love to garden. It helps me deal with stress and I get great veggies to boot. What do you do in the winter time? Do you have any tips for growing inside?

The photo accompanying Meek's article was obviously and deliberately unflattering. However, it's a shame for urban chicken supporters that Ms. Hanavan's poulet enclosure couldn't have utilized a more "urban" design. While I am not typically one to suggest that appearances are everything, in some cases, especially when attempting to win supporters, a little aesthetics can go a long way.

This is something you may have know but I didn't. There is a way to tell from the labels on fruit to see if they have been genetically modified. Here is a web site to read about it:
